Our works involved full structural assessment, the design of steel support frames to support 20 metre high art installations in each atrium, the forming of services risers and the installation of new drainage for the new cafeteria kitchens.

This 40,000 sq ft office and workshop scheme has an unusual fan shaped plan reflecting from the curved site boundaries. The building is 3 storeys high and the offices arrayed around a central top lit atrium. The project achieved BREEAM ‘Very Good’ standards.

Dovecote Meadows is the largest extra care development in Sunderland. Consisting of 175 self-contained one and two bedroom apartments - built over 3 phases from 2013 to 2015. The scheme was a traditional build and all linked on a split level site. Designed to achieve BREEAM rating 'Very Good'.

The Elms

‘The elms’ assisted living flagship development consists of 52 apartments and six bungalows, for rent, sale and shared ownership, all designed specifically for people aged 55 and over who require support with their care or housing.

Conversion of properties 19-26 Claremont Place in Newcastle creating 89 self-contained luxury residential studios for students.
The ramshackle collection of historic add-ons will be stripped back opening up the interior of the buildings to create functional light and airy spaces.

Cluny II

The Grade II Listed Building on Lime street in the Ouseburn was formally a mill and was subsequently converted into an arts space and theatre. The auditorium is constructed within a fully enclosed circular courtyard which required buildability considerations throughout out the project.

Byzantine House, a former synagogue in Jesmond has been refurbished and transformed into 10 luxury flats.
Portland undertook extensive structural surveys in order to establish that the building was able to be converted. Extensive structural modifications were undertaken as part of the conversion.

The restoration of the 5 span Grade II Listed viaduct on the disused Haltwhistle to Alston Railway. Live willow retaining walls were used along with linear drains in the position of the rails.

The central lodge and stable block of Stewart Park in Middlesbrough is a Grade II Listed lodge with stables and dairy dating back to Victorian times and was associated with Marton Hall. The building was previously occupied by Middlesbrough Social services. A predominant feature of our work was the investigations and subsequent proving of the floor structures to receive the additional loads associated with educational uses.

The college is undertaking a 15 year masterplan to cater for a forecasted rapid increase in student numbers. This includes a range of facilities including teaching space, student accommodation, engineering facilities, sports facilities and entertainment facilities.

Gateshead College

The new development, consists of 4,592 m2 (49,428 sq ft) state-of-the-art training facility which included new build and refurbishment of existing blocks. The Skills Academy for Sustainable Manufacturing and Innovation consists of a two storey learning facility accommodating The use of renewable energy was also key with air cooled heat pumps central to the environmental design strategy.

New Warlands Farm

The central lodge and stable block of Stewart Park in Middlesbrough is a Grade II listed lodge with stables and dairy dating back to Victorian times and was associated with Marton Hall. The building was acquired for further education use and Portland Consulting Engineers were appointed to undertake the structural engineering works on behalf of Askham Bryan College as part of our fifth commission with them. A predominant feature of our work was the investigations and subsequent proving of the floor structures to receive the additional loads associated with educational uses.
