Unit L7, Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate

Project Summary

Supported the construction of a speculative 73,000sqft industrial unit in the Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate.  The warehouse feature has been constructed using a steel portal frame.  Portland were required to monitor the rooftop to ensure it would be able to handle the weight of the roof mounted PV panels.

Our Approach

Early on during the feasibility stage of the project, Portland reviewed various options for the steel frame, such as increased bay widths and hit/miss internal props.  This approach allowed us to determine the most cost effective and buildable solution for the client.

As the project moved into the construction stage, the steel fabricator took on Portland’s conceptual steel frame and produced their own design.

By producing the steelwork configuration early on in the project it enabled Portland to ensure the required internal space and building heights were acceptable for the client’s requirements prior to planning approval.   This assisted in avoiding abortive time adjusting building heights to suit proposed steel sizes at a later stage.

Following the introduction of the contractor, Portland worked closely with them to select the appropriate materials and techniques within their knowledge and supply chain.  This collaboration ensured that all parties were accurately aligned and the clients aspirations achieved.
