The Elms_webNORTH East engineering firm Portland Consulting Engineers (Portland) is celebrating the completion of a flagship assisted living scheme in Chester-le-Street.

Doors have now officially opened to residents at ‘the elms’ a £6.5m specialist housing scheme, consisting of 48 two-bedroom, 4 one-bedroom apartments, 2 two-bedroom detached bungalows and 4 two-bedroom semi-detached bungalows  for rent, shared ownership and outright sale.

Providing full structural and civil engineering on their first scheme for Cestria Community Housing, Portland has been responsible for the design of all external works, drainage, foundations and super structure including a steel frame.

Project Engineer and Managing Director of Portland Lee Barr said; ” The Engineering aspect of this project has been challenging, to say the least, as the site included a split level building to be incorporated into the surrounding boundary constraints. Extensive basement retaining walls were introduced to accommodate the split levels and partial basement communal features. In addition, a complex drainage attenuation system was required which had to avoid existing NWL storage and connection into the existing sewers.

“It has been a privilege to work on such an exciting development which although proved extremely challenging at times, the final result of such an impressive scheme is a great sense of achievement.  We are delighted to also be working on other schemes with Cestria Community Housing and look forward to delivering innovative designs to them in future.”

Portland were appointed by Cestria Community Housing – a housing association based in County Durham, working alongside local architect JDDK, and Keepmoat.
